Indigenous Australian People's Unit
Southbank Institute was one of the first educational bodies in Australia some 25 years ago to offer programs addressing the training needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Today, supported by the indigenous community, our Indigenous Australian People's Unit (IAPU) provides an encouraging environment for students to reach their goals in vocational education and training.
The unit offers programs in the following study areas:
- ATSI cultural arts
- design fundamentals
- education
- community services
- business administration
- educational and vocational access
- government administration
IAPU operates in unity with a Community Advisory Council representing industry, government departments and community organisations with the support and advice of Elders. The resulting partnerships formed with government and private business ensure our students have the best opportunities for pathways into employment on completion of their studies.
One of the greatest advantages to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is that we provide specific programs in a non-threatening learning environment. Over the years, the unit has built a strong reputation for cultural respect and support through our state-wide network system and inter-school and institute relationships.
Here at Southbank Institute, we believe our ongoing commitment to the growth of vocational education and training for all cultures makes everyone in the community a winner.
