Enhance your apprenticeship with comprehensive formal qualifications. This program prepares students to work in a variety of Early Childhood Education and Care Services such as Centre Based Care, School Age Care, Family Day Care, holiday programs and play centres. This qualification covers workers who are responsible for developing and evaluating organisational policies, procedures and children’s profiles to plan play and leisure experiences and provide care for children.

Workers at this level are required to have an understanding of Indigenous culture and history and to work with local communities in the provision of services.

This qualification is required by The Child Care Act 2002 for workers who have the responsibility of supervising other staff and volunteers, in Centre Based Care, Family Day Care and School Age Care.

Entry Criteria


Applicants are required to complete prerequisite units from the Certificate III in Children’s Services or equivalent. Students who have not yet completed prerequisite units will be required to undertake these in the initial stage of the program which may affect the duration of study.

It is recommended that applicants have a sound pass in year 12 English.

All employees in the child care profession are required to undergo a Working with Children Check and receive a positive notice and blue card (for more information refer to www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au).

University Pathway Options (require application via QTAC for entry to university following completion of Diploma):
Students who gain entry to the following degree programs may apply to the University for credits as indicated:

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) (Queensland University of Technology)
- 1 year credit (3 years left to complete degree)

Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies (Queensland University of Technology)
- 1 year credit (2 years left to complete degree)

Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Queensland University of Technology)
- 48 credit points (4 years still required to complete degree, but lighter study load in some semesters)

Bachelor of Human Services - Child and Family Studies (Griffith University)
- 1 year credit (2 years left to complete degree)

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
